The full course breakdown

Three courses, taught in Wasaga Beach, each covering the same core skills in more depth as you move up — awareness, verbal boundaries and a short list of protective releases.

First Steps Personal Safety

This is the course for anyone who has never trained before. Over four weekly sessions, 75 minutes each, we work through reading a situation early, standing with confident posture and giving clear verbal boundaries before anything physical is needed.

The last stretch of each class introduces two or three straightforward releases from the holds people actually worry about, practised slowly with a partner and built up only once the movement feels familiar. Questions are welcome throughout — nobody is rushed to the next step.

  • Starter notes booklet covering each week's material
  • Loaner mats and pads for the full course
  • A short welcome call before session one
  • Open to ages 16 and up, newcomers included

Ridge Line Skills Block

Ridge Line runs ten weeks, two 60-minute sessions a week, and is where striking basics, releases from front and rear holds, and protecting your head get proper repetition. We also spend time on getting back up from the ground calmly, since that step gets skipped in a lot of short classes.

Drills only get harder once each person in the room looks ready — there is no fixed week where everyone is pushed to the next level regardless of how the previous one went. Most students arrive here after First Steps, though anyone with a comparable base is welcome to join directly.

  • Hand wraps issued at the start of the block
  • Weekly practice prompts sent by email between sessions
  • A final skills walkthrough in week ten

Summit Season

Summit Season is a 26-week programme for people who want a standing weekly habit rather than a single block. Sessions run two to three times a week and combine everything from First Steps and Ridge Line with scenario days held in a few different indoor spaces, so the practice does not stay tied to one room.

Once a month the group sits down for a short discussion about awareness in daily life — things like reading a room on transit or at an event — rather than drilling technique for the entire hour. Entry requires an initial placement session so the course can be set at the right starting point for you.

  • Four private hours included across the season
  • A training hoodie issued partway through
  • An end-of-season personal practice plan

Who teaches the classes

Classes are led by background-checked instructors with ongoing first-aid certification through a recognised Canadian provider, who walk every new student through the room's layout and pace before a class begins.

What a course is built from

Awareness

Reading a situation and adjusting your position early.

Communication

Clear, calm verbal boundaries practised out loud.

Movement

A short list of releases, drilled slowly before added speed.

Recovery

Getting back up and resetting your stance after contact.

Where classes travel

A martial artist in a white gi launches a flying kick through a board held by a partner outdoors.

The main studio sits in Wasaga Beach, with Summit Season scenario days occasionally held in a community hall nearby so students practise outside one familiar room. Students from along the Georgian Bay shoreline — Collingwood, Stayner and the surrounding townships — regularly make the short drive in for evening classes.
